5 Tips to Save Money on Home Renovations

5 Tips to Save Money on Home Renovations

So you want to spruce up your home but don’t want to break the bank. Here are some simple things that you can do to save money on your home renovations!

Keep an eye out for deals, coupons and discounts

Home improvement stores often have great deals on tools or products that they don’t need anymore or during their seasonal sales. Know what your local stores have going on so you can check them out beforehand.

Shop around for the best prices on necessities

I’m talking about things that aren’t home modifications. Think about how often you really need dishwashing detergent or dish soap? It’s probably not that often and if it is, you can probably go to your corner store and buy it for cheaper than a few dollars at Home Depot or Lowes. If you feel like splurging, go with the high quality brands and make sure to use coupons/savings on your items as well as discounts offered by stores such as Amazon or Walmart.

Schedule your home renovations before your tax return

You already know that you need to do your taxes in the spring, don’t you? Well, if you want to get a nice tax return on some of the money you’re investing in your home renovations or remodeling projects, then try pulling them out of the bank and scheduling them before your tax time. If this is too late and you have to wait until after the year ends, don’t worry. I have found that a lot of contractors like doing small increments during the year instead of waiting until tax time and this often means they can offer discounts or coupons as well as use their discounted materials and supplies going into next year’s project.

Do you have any old furniture/appliances?

Before you say “yes”, look around your home and see what you can get rid of. I’m not just talking about stuff in your garage or furniture that’s just sitting around collecting dust. Go through your closets and storage cabinets, think about what you don’t use and make a plan to sell this stuff at a yard sale. I know it’s easier said than done but if you’re on a budget, then try to be realistic with the things that you have.

Stay organized during renovations

If there’s one thing I learned, it is to stay organized during renovations and remodeling projects. Have you ever been in a house that had so much stuff going on in the kitchen, living room and dining room that it became overwhelming? This is exactly what I went through when I remodeled the kitchen of my home and there’s no way I could have done it without having a ridiculous amount of stuff going on at one time. There were times that I would look around thinking: “what am I doing here?” Stay realistic about how much time you’re going to be able to spend on any particular project as well as how much stuff you’re bringing into your home. If you organize yourself beforehand, you’ll have less stress and can focus more on your renovation project.
